The GRIP staff and community understand the importance of creating a real sense of “home” for the shelter’s families, with safe, welcoming spaces for residents of all ages to work, play, and rest. That’s why it’s critical that the team gather the resources to rehaul the shelter’s playground, giving GRIP kids a fun place where they can be — well, kids!
The playground – located toward the back of the shelter grounds – has a beautiful mural from donors, but the equipment is decades-old and not as inviting nor as safe as newer playgrounds. GRIP is currently engaged in a multi-phase revitalization process, but needs extra support to bring this project all the way home.
GRIP is grateful to the Richmond City Council for granting the initial $25,000 that was needed to carry out the first phase. With design drawings currently in process, staff hopes to procure permits within the coming weeks.
Once these are finalized, contractors are ready to jump into Phase 1: expanding the space. GRIP will need an additional $10,000 to finish this first phase, and $50,000 in order to complete the next phase of development, which involves purchasing upgraded playground equipment. GRIP is excited to announce that the first $5,000 of this fundraising effort has been generously donated by longtime supporter Sims Metal.
GRIP needs help to finish building a new and improved area for shelter families to play in. Right now, visitors at GRIP will see that youth often use the parking lot as a makeshift playground to catch balls, run around, and hang out with each other; suffice it to say that this isn’t a safe or permanent solution, and these children need and deserve a better space to enjoy themselves.
GRIP is currently seeking additional funds to make this vision a reality. You can help either with money or just by circulating this story to your networks, including potential major funders.
Donations of any size always help; these can be made at gripcares.org/donate/.
