Ruthie Abelson Olivas, one of GRIP’s newer board members, is a force in the community, a leader on the board of the Rosie the Riveter Trust and the League of Women Voters, active in the Rotary Club, and was named a 2024 Woman of the Year by Congressman John Garamendi.  She’s also a successful realtor when she’s not volunteering her time to serve the community.

“Ruthie’s selfless efforts resonate deeply throughout our community, inspiring many to get involved and make a difference,” Garamendi wrote about her. “Ruthie has left an indelible mark on West Contra Costa County through her tireless volunteer work and leadership across multiple organizations.”

We pulled her away from all those duties for a few minutes for this Q&A to find out what brought her to GRIP and what she will help GRIP accomplish in her term.

What motivates you?
Seeing our community improve and thrive motivates me. After moving out of my hometown in West County for about a decade, I was saddened to see various problems which have gotten worse over time such as the unhoused. It frustrates me to see issues not being resolved when I see, in my opinion, common sense solutions that are not being applied. It brings me such joy to connect those in need with resources they otherwise would not have known about. Collaboration helps to reach common goals for many if not all.

 What drew you to GRIP?
I was introduced to Executive Director Ralph Payton who educated me on the great things GRIP does. Then I did outreach with Director of Programs Siu Tuivailala to deliver food to those living in the streets.  Ralph, Siu and the staff are so dedicated to helping others. The positive energy of staff, the holistic approach of GRIP’s programming, and their focus on keeping families together is amazing.

What is Richmond’s greatest strength and how do you tap into that?
Richmond’s greatest strength is its diversity and desire to help others.  We tap into that by educating the city on the accomplishments GRIP has made and encourage volunteerism within the community to take part.
