Saturday, October 5th saw high temperatures and even higher spirits at Nicholl Park in Richmond as the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program (GRIP) celebrated its 38th Annual Harmony Walk, a community festival that raised over $63,410 in money and goods to support GRIP’s core programs. This year’s event shifted focus from the walk itself to a “Harmony Walk… I

n the Park!” theme, encouraging attendees to hang out on the grass, mingle with their neighbors, and enjoy the sunshine and variety of activities.

The Harmony Walk, emceed by ABC7 news anchor Julian Glover, kicked off with opening remarks from community leaders and elected officials. Then, those participating in the short “fun run” set off on the route to GRIP’s shelter facility (about a mile round-trip), where visitors had the chance to take a tour of the family shelter and long-standing community soup kitchen.

Back at the park, attendees heard a lively program filled with musical performances by local talent including the DeJean Middle School band, rousing speeches from community advocates, and ongoing raffle prize giveaways. Folks were also encouraged to visit the 44 groups hosting tables to explore resources from community-based organizations and shop from local businesses. The kids’ zone was one of the most popular parts of the park that day, complete with a bouncy house, lawn games, bubbles, and a craft table. Attendees also had the opportunity to visit local food trucks from Curbside Kitchen and Black Star Pirate BBQ and booths serving up delicious eats and refreshing drinks, and even played pickleball at the park’s tennis courts!

“The Harmony Walk is a vital event for GRIP, fostering community unity while raising essential funds to support services for those facing homelessness and poverty,” remarked GRIP’s Executive Director, Ralph Payton. “On a beautiful day, it brought together diverse participants—families, businesses, and organizations—who share a commitment to compassion and support. Beyond fundraising, our event strengthens community connections, raises awareness, and reinforces the message that everyone plays a role in creating a more equitable society. Hearing our city and county leaders express their support for GRIP’s mission of combating hunger and homelessness were key moments of the day’s activities. From the food trucks to a local school band, the Harmony Walk was enjoyed by all!”
